On the twenty-ninth of September at nine am, the Old Saybrook high school Ecology club (led by Mrs. Karen Carlone) participated in a beach clean up. Those in attendance included OSHS students: Erik Nguyen, Matt Graneiro, Melanie Brodeur, Erin FitzGerald, Zachary Chupak, Luke D’ambrosi, Nick Dibble, Josh Scherber, Samantha Lennon, Sean McAvoy, Lily Hontz, Sara Fitzpatrick, and Grant Patterson. The club began their clean up at Harvey’s beach and then proceeded to Town Beach. A significant amount of trash and recyclables were recovered. Mostly small items like cigarette butts and debris were found. Also, the team separated recyclables from the trash. The crew did not limit their clean up to the beach. They ventured out into the surrounding marsh and shrubbery, as well. Larger items were found there like water bottles and chip bags. In all, the club filled two garbage bags of environmentally harmful waste. The team spent two hours on their clean up and persevered through the cold drizzle with a positive attitude. It was a successful event; the club definitely left the beaches better than they found them!
